Kyo-yaki porcelain, or porcelain formed and fired in Kyoto, is thought to trace its origins back to the late 1590s in Keicho-Era Japan. The proliferation of the Japanese tea ceremony custom in the 17th century brought with it a massive rise in the production of teacups, tea containers, tea bowls and other earthenware.

Modern Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki porcelain typify Japan, and many different techniques are used to produce a variety of earthenware. Among the types of Kyo-yaki well known throughout the world are Antoku, Ichiraku, Kashun, Kaho, Ganka, Kyosen, Kozo, Goun, Keiho, Shunzan, Shoami, Shoho, Zuiko, Zuisho, Seisen, Dainichi, Toan, Toraku, Bahan, Hozan and Hokusai Pottery, to name several.

Kyoto’s history and cultural atmosphere show in the development of Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki porcelain, and these fine traditional works of art exemplify magnificent, delicate Japan. Most works of Kyo-yaki porcelain feature an abundance of colors and images hand-drawn by seasoned artisans.
